Setting Up A Family Friendly Home

29th February 2012 by Babies No Comments

Simply because you’ve got young children does not mean that you just cannot have a tastefully decorated home. Below are a few great ideas that can be used for making your house more “child friendly” without needing to lock everything away.

If You have Toddlers

Many individuals believe that when they have toddlers, things that are breakable must be banished to the closet until it’s safe to display them again, but this is not so. All that you actually need to accomplish will be to rearrange some things - breakable knickknacks can be moved to an unreachable place such as a shelf or a piano top that’s outside of the child’s reach. It is possible to shift unbreakables, like silver, baskets, wooden boxes, and metal objects, on to the lower surfaces which are toddler height such as lower shelves, coffee tables, and side tables.

In the toddler’s bedroom, you can put books and soft toys on your low shelves where they are easily accessible, and display your breakable keepsakes and picture frames on top shelves where they can’t be reached. Be sure that any furniture pieces which could potentially tip over are attached securely to the wall to ensure there will be no unfortunate accidents.

If you are a fan of cutesy frames, a child’s room is the best place to display pictures in cute baby picture frames or sweet heart picture frames.

As The Children Grow…

You can easily transform the baby room into a more grown-up looking room with only a couple of basic changes: Replace a rocking chair by using a comfy upholstered one to read in.

If the changing table is the type that is set atop the complete dresser, you’ll be able to take away the changing table top and put some wall shelves above it for many more years of use from your dresser.

Replace “baby” fabrics and also designs with a lot more mature ones like plaids or stripes that are within the same general color scheme in order that they’ll still complement the rest of the room (walls and floors).

When it’s time to move forward from large floor toys for babies, replace these with a tiny table and chairs set (be sure the chairs are sturdy) for a nice spot for your child to color, play games with friends or have a “tea party.”  It’s always nice to give a child a location of their very own to relax and play both alone and with friends.

If the child’s room has “baby” wallpaper, change it out with washable vinyl paper in a light color that coordinates with any fabrics in the room.

Closed In Storage

Whether you’ve got children or otherwise, it can seem like there is never enough space for storage. One way to extend your space would be to store clothing that is out of season in closed storage bins where you cannot view it, and place on the top shelf of your closet.

No matter which room you are working with, when you wish to keep your son or daughter’s playthings it’s nice having open shelving for such things as toys and books, but it is also useful to store some things out of sight for less overall mess and a less cluttered look. Some individuals opt for a trunk of some kind, however it may not be the best choice because of the potential of the lid slamming down on tiny fingers. A more sensible choice for closed storage will be cabinets with either sliding doors or drawers or doors that open out, or a mixture of both. It is possible to find such storage cabinets which will fit inside a closet, too.

So, don’t despair once you have got a child which will soon turn into a toddler. Try these tips and you and your child will enjoy your house.
