29th June 2009 by Babies No Comments

So you’ve just learned you’re going to be a new mom, congratulations! Being a parent can be very fulfilling but there are traps for the unwary. If this is your first baby, there are so many things you’ll need to know. So where do you go to find out about how to best care for your new baby?

There are plenty of parenting classes available today and you may be wondering if these are for you. What are the pros and cons of taking these types of classes? We’ll go in to these below and maybe make your decision a bit easier.

Now you may have had previous experience such as babysitting or looking after your friends’ kids. Take it from me this doesn’t even give you a glimpse of what parenting is all about. Parenting is a huge responsibility and while it is very rewarding, you really need some knowledge up front to get you through from day to day. Parenting classes can supply this for you.

What will you learn? You’ll learn the know how on getting your baby to sleep, how to properly change a diaper and the right way to feed your baby. Parenting classes can provide hands on learning rather than just learning theory. You’ll get to practice handling a baby, although dolls are usually used for these sessions.

Are the classes affordable? Most parenting classes have a variety of prices and formats so there’s every chance you’ll find one that you can afford. There are also free classes in some cities so you may find them by checking your local paper. These free classes are usually provided by non profit groups.

Another bonus you may not have considered is the ability to meet other first time mums who are in the same situation as you. These types of classes are very popular so will meet all different types of people, some of whom may become your friends. If you’re a mom without family support, this could be very important for you.

There are disadvantage to everything and the problem with dealing with a class schedule is of course time. A lot of expectant moms work all day until just before the birth. If you’re not working, you may not be able to get to and from the classes easily. These are a couple of things to consider.

However if you are able, I hope you will try these classes for yourself. You will quickly see the many ways that parenting classes will benefit you as a first time mom. You’ll get help and information and meet new friends into the bargain. Most importantly, you’ll be able to tackle the job of motherhood with new found confidence!
